Approximate Cost Breakdown
This is a list of usual and approximate costs to obtain your private pilot certificate.
You should plan to schedule lessons 3 to 4 times each week, and no less than 2.
Training & Equipment
- Self-paced online ground school course (video based) $280
- FAA written exam $160
- Remedial training (one hour) with flight instructor after written exam $80
- 40 hours of flight training with instructor (includes airplane & fuel) $8,400*
- 20 hours of solo flight practice (all by yourself) $2,600 ($130 /hour for airplane)
- Plotter (needed for ground school, flight planning, and FAA written exam) $13
- CX-3 flight computer $120
- Log book $10
- FAR/AIM book of FAA regulations and rules $20
- Pilot Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge $20
- Airplane Flying Handbook $25
- (2) Section charts (aviation maps) $20 ($10 each)

- Final checkride with designated pilot examiner $700
